Why are the Republicans pushing for more oil drilling?

It seems that McCain and Palin's whole platform has to do with drilling for more oil. How will that solve anything? Shouldn't we be more focused on alternative renewable resources such as wind and solar power? Maybe I'm living in a bubble, but are there people out there who actually want us drilling for more oil in Alaska and in the ocean? Why are the Republicans pushing for more oil drilling?
I agree that drilling doesn't solve anything. By the time the rigs were in place, we could be working with new technology and renewable sources. If they would put the money behind it and the tax incentives. Why are the Republicans pushing for more oil drilling?
We have a whole lot of oil to be drilled , which will reduce the price at the pump, if you follow the GOP thought we drill and At the same time develop alternative energies such as T. Boone Pickens ( a republican by the way) plan. Obama instead wants to tax the oil companies, which will increase the cost at the pump, stop drilling, which 85% of Americans want, and develop alternatives. The democrat plan will cost the consumer aproximately 27.5% more than today at the pump while the republican plan will save the consumer 11.7%
The plan is this: Drill for oil now to lower gas prices. Renewable energy is all well and good but we haven't figured out how to heat our homes, run busses and run trains on solar and wind. While we are drilling for our own resources, we simultaneously research alternative and new forms of energy. Even if they figured out how to run a car engine on a tomato tomorrow,, it would be many years before everyone could afford the technology, it could be developed on a wide scale, and the economy can adjust to the new idea. Changes of this vast scope need to be done slowly so as to be as less impacting to your daily life as possible. So yes, there are almost 2 million people who have signed the Drill Here/Drill now petition.
You are certainly living in a bubble..

Expanding drilling is the realistic approach. Alternative energy sources are good, and should be getting a lot of research money. Altenative energy sources aren't ready.. and, even if they work out, they won't be for decades.

The problem is we need to power our existing infrastructure till they're ready and we build the necessary infrastructure to utilize them. People need to get to work, farmers still need to plow fields, trucks/trains/ships still need to transport goods, power plants still to to supply electricity... and for the foreseeable future, that is going to require oil.

In short, we live in the present... not a theoretical future. We have to take care of our current needs first, then worry about the future.

So.. drill in Alaska. Drill off shore. Drill in my back yard. Do what it takes to get us to the point where we don't have to use oil.
Energy responsibility is more than alternative energy sources and renew-ables. The idea is that we need to secure our energy needs by all means possible until a time that all needs can be met with alternatives. A responsible drilling program over the course of decades would not have prevented the energy costs we have now...but would have reduced it somewhat and will again in the future if we begin now. One day there will be no oil and the societies that still depend on it will collapse. But an even more frightening scenario is the collapse of the industrial west not because the oil is gone..but because we don't pump enough of it to meet demand. It's like refusing to buy any groceries at the store because you are depending on a garden to supply all your food. If the garden doesn't pan out you have to go to the store. If alternative energy and renew ables fail to meet the demands of the world after we have placed all our faith in it and only it...then it will take 8 to 10 years to increase the production of oil. To now continue to invest in the resource that our entire society is fueled by in the hope that an alternative will be sufficient is irresponsible.
Most Republicans are myopic creatures, but thankfully not all of them are.

A critical message from T. Boone Pickens: ';America is in a hole and it's getting deeper every day. We import 70 percent of our oil at a cost of $700 billion a year - four times the annual cost of the Iraq war. I've been an oil man all my life, but this is one emergency we can't drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil. On January 20, 2009, a new President gets sworn in. If we're organized, we can convince Congress to make major changes toward cleaner, cheaper and domestic energy resources.To get this done, I need your help. Check out the plan. If you think it's worth fighting for, please join our effort, and encourage everyone you know to do the same.';
To increase the supply of oil

The only realistic way to reduce gasoline prices is to increase the supply of oil.

That is basic economics.

Most American families cannot afford to pay $4.00 or more per gallon of gasoline and still feed and clothe their families and pay their mortages.

That pretentious far left wants high gasoline prices to force us out of our cars.

However the American people need to use their cars to get to work, take their children to school, and shop for food and clothing.

The radical far left expects most Americans to ride bicycles or walk. However many Americans have to commute to work over 50 miles each way.

Riding a bicycle to work is not a realistic solution for most Americans.

Of course the radical extreme left hates most Americans. The radical extreme left does not even want a decent solution to the transportation challenges of the American People.
I am not opposed to drilling as a SHORT TERM solution, but it must be part of a broader energy plan that is going to lead us to complete independence on oil at some point in the near future, and a reliance on renewable energy sources instead (which is exactly what Obama has said in regards to drilling, too). I have read McCain's energy plan and there is not one single dollar being committed to the research or development of solar, wind, or hydro power. So for him to say that he is on board with the energy problem our nation faces is simply disingenuous.
Yes, there are plenty of people out there who want drilling. Nature is amazingly resilient, and drilling can be done in a way that doesn't harm our environment or animals - if that's your issue. I'm tired of buying gas and wondering how much of the money I'm spending is going to middle eastern countries that fund terrorists! We have oil - we have plenty of it - we should use our own oil. But drilling is not the ONLY answer - only part of it. We need to use more wind, clean coal, and natural gas. I feel that pursuing every option is the best plan right now.
Yeah , I am one of them. If you want to ride your bike or walk every where then by all means, have a great time...

sure renewable engery sources are great but will take many years to develop and many many many more years for it to replace oil.

so until then we can't be paying whatever the foreign countries want to charge because they know we will buy it. i also hate giving my money to arrogant people who are loving every minute of our suffering.

They are making so much money off of us and pretty much rubbing it on our face, but all good things must come to an end, even it's it by drilling at home or alternative energy.

then have a lot of control and are thriving once again off us, but eventually it will end and they will return back to their desolate economies with nothing left to show for their small reign of greediness.

We all know by now that drilling for oil wouldn't solve our problems. Oil wouldn't hit the market for 7 years and even when it does, it will go on the world market and wouldn't amount to any more than a drop in the bucket. The Republicans don't care about that or the environment. They are only trying to put more money in the pockets of the big oil companies. Palins husband works for BP. What a coincidence, isn't it?
No one except liberals say that drilling is the entire solution. You people claiming that the GOP believes it is the solution doesnt make it our opinion. Drilling is a sensible PIECE of the overall solution. We must look at EVERYTHING and do so without the partisan rancor.

Oil, coal, wind, solar, hydro, hydrogen etc etc etc
New meaning to phrase Drill Drill Drill :)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080911/ap_o鈥?/a>

Between 2002 and 2006, 19 oil marketers 鈥?nearly a third of the Denver office staff 鈥?received gifts and gratuities from oil and gas companies, including Chevron Corp., Shell, Hess Corp. and Denver-based Gary-Williams Energy Corp., the investigators found.

';Employees frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relationships with oil and natural gas company representatives'; who referred to some of the government workers as the ';MMS Chicks.';
Because ExxonMobile only has 7 billion barrels in reserves, which is the ammount our country uses in 1 year.

About the only thing I agree with the conservatives on is to drill for oil. After that can we start producing compressed hydrogen with wind mills and solar panels right here at home with AMERICAN workers please.
The reason is there is so much oil availible to us in this world, that it is not yet necessary to start using alternatives. Only govenmental and monetary politics get in the way of sourcing. If the US drills and refines more, and stops looking across the water, wouldn't you think a lot of current political issues might be resolved?
the U.S. holds 3% of the worlds oil supply... we use 25% of the world oil...

we already drill nearly half our oil already...

so i don't understand how, if we USE 25%...and we only sit on 3%... how drilling the rest of that 3% will effect anything...

also... the companies who drill and OWN the oil leases..they'll sell i to the highest bidder... that doesn't sound like a good way to lower gas prices...does it?
Yell yes drill! Drill now!!! Drill as much as possible!!

Why would we want to pay other countries for the oil we can get out of our own country?

Pay ourselves for oil...hmmm, what a concept.

And at the same time, push hard for alternative fuels.

The real question is: ';Why are so many people against the USA getting their own oil?';
Everyone is interested in alternative oil, but we have to keep geting are oil from somewhere till we find that alternative. Dont believe that MCcain doesnt care about alternative energy because he does.

MCcain08
We need them all. Oil, Wind, Solar, Nuclear, Biofuels, Natural gas. We need to ween ourselves off a critical dependence on foreign oil.
You are in a bubble. Most Americans would like some relief at the pump. It's universal and not a partisan issue. It only matters to whacko enviro-nazis.
Increasing the world supply of oil lowers prices, simple. Why must we focus only on alternative energy sources and ignore proven technology? That seems very foolish as we shouldn't have any issue doing both..
Read this well known article. Maybe it will give you a better insight

Because some of us live in places where biking to work is not an option and we will freeze to death literally in the winter without fuel oil.
Several reasons

1) Using our own oil

2) Quicker solution to a long term problem

3) Oil men in the White House for last 8 and if McCain gets in, Palin's husband has ties to oil
Oops! You should probably be aware that Obama is now for drilling too. So is Nancy 'no drilling, no way' Pelosi.

Repubs. would like to drill domestically so we can stop buying from foreign companies.
it go's like this ...

O I L - M O N E Y - G U N S

O I L - M O N E Y - G U N S

now sing it children ...
wow so 72% of america is republican.then mccain palin should be a slam dunk!
uh....because we should

has obama authored any legislation on alternatives during his weeks and weeks of experience in office?
More money for their oil buddies. Two oil men in the white house and gas goes from $1.50 to $4.00 per gallon. Duh.
McCain and Bush both have Oil businesses. What do you think?
come on now, we NEED oil
