Why are the Democrats continuing to block oil drilling in ANWR? How high does gas have to go up?

i just paid $3.95 in Indiana! and for what? We need more oil now and there is only one party standing in the way - DEMOCRATS!Why are the Democrats continuing to block oil drilling in ANWR? How high does gas have to go up?
It is the extreme left in the Democratic Party that is blocking drilling in ANWAR.

I and many other members of the Democratic Party support drilling in ANWAR and off the coasts to boost supplies of oil.Why are the Democrats continuing to block oil drilling in ANWR? How high does gas have to go up?
To the Dems stating it would be 10 years before we start getting oil from ANWR- this vote was taken 10 years ago. Your arguements are pathetic and hollow.

';In 1995, Republicans prepared to take up the battle again and included a provision for ANWR in the federal budget. President Bill Clinton vetoed the entire budget and expressed his intention to veto any other bill that would open ANWR to drilling.';
Do you have any clue what it will take to get oil OUT of ANWR?

10 years+ of infrastructure development, there is no pipeline within hundreds of miles of it, and they can't connect into the Alaska oil pipeline because it is at capacity.

You can't use tankers to take it out, and you sure as hell can't afford to use trains, therefore 10 years at LEAST to build a massivily expensive pipline.

Then once you spend all that money, you will have 5% of the US oil supplies for 10 years max. That is the HIGHEST possible estimate and not likely, more like 3% for 7 years.

So we spend 17 years, trillions of dollars, to turn on a seven year drip of oil. The only people that are going to benefit is big oil because they will be raping idiotic investment capitalists like you and producing no results.

How about we start thinking about these things intelligently.
I agree with you on the Alaska Natural Wildlife Reserve. It is mostly permafrost and drilling techniques are far cleaner than they were a quarter of a century ago.

But the real question is why the American Oil Party headed by Bush/Cheney, which does not care less about destroying the Republican Party, is not using the sometime 3rd biggest oil producer in the world - Iraq - which we happen to control, to pump oil and break the OPEC cartel.

Why is Bush/Cheney so defiant that they want to run a price support scheme for foreign oil called the Strategic Petroleum Reserve?

The sooner there is someone else in the White House, the sooner things will get better. Sadly, Senators Clinton and Obama are promising more taxes, more regulation and higher tariffs. That is how liberal Republican Herbert Hoover turned a minor downturn into the Great Depression.
If we could use ANWR to solve our energy problems it would be worth it. But to sacrifice that land so your gas will go down to $3.90 isn't worth it.

If the US decided to drill in ANWR to get off of foreign oil and to force development of alternative fuels that will work, I'd be for it. But why should we tear up one of the most beautiful places in the country just to put a few bucks in our pockets? If we drilled, we'd still buy oil, still stall on alternative fuels because we kept oil cheaper than them, and we'd be in the same boat again in three to five years. If drilling ANWR doesn't change anything, it shouldn't be done.

Besides, if the Republicans wanted to do this, they would have. The dems have only had congress for two years.
It's because the democrats care about money more then they do the citizens of this country. We have oil fields that are right here in the US that are not the government reserved or emergency whatever they call it. They are oil fields that were found about 5 years ago and the democrats are the ones that are not letting anyone drill.

I live in Michigan and paid $4.00 yesterday. It's sad but unfortunately the dems. control the house so that's how it's going to be unless people step up and actually take action!
Let me ask you this... why didn't our illustrious President foresee this problem that you guys claim was created during Clinton's Presidency and start drilling in ANWR when he had a Republican-led Congress for the first six years of his time in office?

But I realize it's difficult to accept the failings of your own party and much prettier to blame things on the other guy.
why has both parties and big oil companies blocked the advancement of alternative fuels for decades. We are still using the same fuel we used a hundred years ago. That is a joke and a black eye on America who should have led the way on this.

don't blame this on Democrats. that is ridiculous.
1. By the time you set up the drilling, hire the people, pay them the hazard pay, build the refineries and infrastructure to actually make it usable... I guarantee you the oil companies don't charge a penny less than OPEC is per barrel... so it won't help the price at the pump.

2. If the Republicans REALLY wanted it done.. they had 6 years in which they pretty much said ';Screw what the Democrats want'; and could have done it then.. so don't spin this on us.. your party doesn't want it either.

3. You are talking about bandaids to a long term problem. We need solutions, not quick fixes.
We're just going to sit around and pretend that any amount of conservation on the part of consumers is going to do anything, ignoring the fact that for each gallon of oil we stop using, China and India guzzle down 10 more gallons.

There are too many things dependent on oil for us to magically get away from it. The only solution to our immediate concern is to both locate more sources of oil and to build more refining capacity. Both should have been done years ago since they take time to do. ANWR isn't the only source of oil on US soil.
We built the Alyeska pipeline with total concern for the environment, a branch line to the Reserve is a no brainer, and flow in that pipeline has gone from 95% in 1980 to todays 30% so there is plenty of room for additional input.

The fanatic environmentalist deathgrip on congress is the big bugaboo... whether Demo or Repub... We either drill in the reserve, start using Elk Hills (untouched to date), pay $8 a gallon, or jail the petroleum management crooks causing the shortage in this country. All Alaka petrolium is now refined into gasoline and diesel, and shipped to Japan for $4 a gallon wholesale... A crime.
OH GIVE ME A BREAK! We wouldn't need to drill any where if your guy Bush would go to his oil buddies and say ';HEY! How about you guys quit taking EVERY chance to gouge the American public and raising prices every time the wind blows near a drill? Hey! How about you guys make a decent profit instead of record profits?';

';Hey how about we make some gas efficient cars?';

';Hey Moron in your F150...I realize you're a white male and all and need your TRUCK to git er dun and all, but seeing as you're only getting 13 miles to the gallon and it is usually just you in the car going to work...maybe you could drive something that gets decent gas mileage,save some money for yourself, improve the future for your children!';

There are many many things that can and should be done before we further destroy the world for our children. As a democrat I will proudly take credit for thinking we should do that first.

Now since it is raining and I cannot walk my child to school to save gas today, I will get in my car that is large enough to fit 2 car seats and a dog, but still manages to get 34 miles to the gallon..because I have a brain!

I don't know what kind of car you're in, but I'm betting truck or minivan, or SUV...anyone who drives a car getting less than 26 MPG should shut up and deal with it!
Because drilling in ANWR will not produce a significant amount of oil, and will have absolutely no effect on gas prices, and will do more damage to the environment than it's worth....We have a s**tload of oil right now...ever hear of the SPR?...look it up.....your buddy Bush won't open it up.....so before you go getting all ';Democrats are evil'; on us.....take a moment....and use your f**king brain, instead of regurgitating crap you heard from Hannity.
I would love to see who exactly contributes to the dems who oppose drilling in the U.S. As much as they say it is to protect the environment, I would bet that a bunch of these dems are getting contributions from the rich Arabs who would stand to lose a fortune if we had our own oil.
I think we need to learn the lesson of being so dependent upon fossil fuels. ANWR could only provide ~ 1- 2 years worth of TOTAL domestic consumption. Simply raising CAFE standards for automobiles by 2 mpg, would result in more available oil in 1 year than ANWR could ever produce.
Bloody hell

For the last time, the oil there is junk and would be too expensive to process, AND it would take years to set up the infastuctrure to utilize it. AANNNDDD on top of that it would wreak the natural environment.

Get you head out of your butt.
It does not contain enough oil to matter.

If they drill there its not going to do a damn thing to bring down prices.Its a short lived temporary fix.

Why are republicans standing in the way of developing wind farms and solar farms?
You don't seem to understand. What Nancy Pelosi wants to do is make everybody so angry by November that they vote for ';change.'; Yet, she will still be there, so the joke will be on us.
We CANNOT drill our way out of our energy crisis. We need to USE LESS, and to switch to non-petroleum sources of propulsion.
Alaska oil by contract is sold to Japan

it wouldnt help you and me in the US at all
ANWR is NOT the solution. Give it up. PLEASE.
im guessing when you have to pay $8.00 a gallon
