They always say that it will take ten years to drill for offshore oil and become less dependent. When does the ten years start? It seems that the countdown has been delayed. Just think how great it would be to start today! What is it with this oil drilling thing?
They can already be independent, did you know Alaska has as much oil if not more than Saudi Arabia, what they are telling you is rubbish. It's capped but they don't want to touch it. the wells have already been drilled. What is it with this oil drilling thing?
It won't start today, and it won't start at all if the Democrats have their way. The Democrats have spent the last two decades blocking virtually every piece of legislation that would make us less dependent on foreign oil (oil shale, oil sand, clean-coal power plants, nuclear power plants, the ANWR, the Bakken Formation) all in the name of the environment. The sad thing is it's a bunch of hooey. The technology has evolved to the point where these resources can be harvested with minimal impact on the environment. Heck, even the French, who are more environmentally conscious than we are, have approved the use of nuclear reactors to generate electricity. Now they're the biggest exporter of electricity in Europe.
What's the answer from the Dem camp? Develop alternative sources of energy. It's not a bad idea, but it's going to take at least 10 years to develop any of these alternate sources of energy for widespread use, so what do we do in the meantime? Another incentive from the Dems is to make more cars that run on E85 ethanol. Too bad it has already shown itself to be not economically feasible -- just look at how much the price of corn jumped this year when they were TALKING about producing more E85 ethanol. So what do they have left? Check your tire pressure. Yes, it's true that properly inflated tires improve fuel economy, but it doesn't address the root problem. We have millions of cars that run on gasoline, no one is producing enough vehicles that run on alternate fuel sources, and even if they were available there are people who can't afford to buy a new car.
BOTTOM LINE: We can't just cut off the oil dependency. It's going to take at least 20 years. One Presidential candidate knows that, and that's why he's proposing more drilling and development of the resources we already have. The other has thrown all his eggs in a pie-in-the-sky basket of hope that an alternative will come along that can be developed and implemented nationwide within the next 10 years. So which do you want -- a candidate who lives in the real world or one that lives in a dream world?
The simple answer is...USE LESS. I seems the Republican Conservatives and even some Democrats don't want to talk about turning out the lights, driving slower in fuel efficient cars with less horse power, public transportation, recycling, etc. etc. Heaven forbid that we make a little personal sacrifice to save the planet. And by the way, there is plenty of oil but the oil companies who are beholden to no country or government seek to make record yearly profits by not drilling and not refining what they have.
The world it at or past ';peak oil';. No matter how much we drill we have passed the peak of production. Unfortunately the decline in production is going in the opposite direction of increasing demand.
A geologist (K Hubbert) came up with this theory in 1956 - it is coming true NOW.
Oil will become more expensive (it should). Gone are the days (daze?) of cheap energy and wasteful self entitlement. Human species WAKE UP - the party is over! Our hangover is just beginning.
