Obama did not change his mind about off shore drilling. He remains personally opposed to it, but said that he is willing to compromise in order to get a comprehensive energy plan passed. I know the past 8 years have enabled many Americans to completely forget the concept of compromise, but a willingness to compromise and accept the views of the opposition is and always has been one of the primary reasons for my support of Senator Obama. I am shocked at the number of people who are saying it is because his position didn't poll well or because he changes his position like the wind. McCain gave a speech on May 30th talking about why we can not afford more offshore drilling and by June 16th he was running ads attacking Obama for not supporting off shore drilling and accusing him of being the reason for high gas prices. He later acknowledged that the high gas prices were the result of 30 years of bad policy on drilling (apparently the last time we had good policy was the Carter administration). If this is true, he has been a policy maker for 25 of those 30 years and Obama has for almost 4 of those years, so McCain must reason that he is to blame more so than Obama.


As far as tapping into the oil reserves, that only happens in election years with the exception of post Katrina. It seems to me that the oil reserves are more like a reserve on approval ratings. They were tapped by Clinton in 2000 as Gore was falling in the polls, they were tapped by Bush after Hurricane Katrina when his approval rating dropped near 40% for the first time. Now that there is no incumbent running and gas prices are at record highs, both candidates are calling for a short fix by tapping into the reserves (by short I am assuming they want something that will last from mid August through the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November). Obama's plan at least has the oil companies leasing the oil with a pay back plan.





As for the person who said Obama changed his mind because it will take decades for alternative energy to make progress and this is the only way to solve the problem today, they seem to lack knowledge of the situation. Alternative energy is already on the road with E85 fuel and other ethanol plans. Increasing ethanol is also a process that can start immediately. By increasing nuclear energy we can refocus some oil that is used for heating to automobile fuel and increase solvency almost immediately, and the same goes for increased wind energy production (ask T Boone Pickens who is very conservative and spending millions of dollars pushing for this approach). Obama did not suggest inflating our tires would eliminate the need for offshore drilling, but it was mentioned in his energy plan under what we can all do to help. Finally, any new off shore drilling takes at least 10 years to tap into oil and convert it into usable light sweet crude. Off shore drilling is a plan that does not help us out now, but takes a decade to make progress.Why has Obama changed his tune on off-shore oil drilling and tapping into the Stratigic Oil Reserves?
He has switched his tune for the time being, lets watch him switch again if he is elected. It is a ploy to get more support from those who think we need to be drilling, such as my self. He will not get my support even with this change of tune, because he keeps switching back and forth, and I really think it is just to get support from those who want to see drilling.
Because ... His PuppetMasters pulled his strings !!!

Because he needs to gain some popularity back, so he has to change his stance yet again. Atleast mcCain for the most part stands by his word, Obama changes his ideals like the wind changes direction.
He knows inflating our tires and creating alternative energy won't help now. Alternative energy will take decades to get progress. The only answer is to drill in our oceans and lands until alternative energy works and powers most of the U.S.
Because his former position was losing him support. . . .so in typical Obama fashion, he adjusts.
It's called comprimise. You know, what we need more of in congress?





And before you get all high and mighty about Obama being flexible, well - so was McCain.
He had no choice. The polls indicate the majority of Americans support more drilling.
Because McCain is looking better at saying he'll do that, so why won't he. It gets his popularity out there.
because his previous stance on the issue didn't test well in polls.
As I wrote to Cafferty's blog yesterday, because he has to deal with an electorate who largely think there is an instant solution to high gas prices. It would be nice to think they would listen to logic, but they won't. They want empty promises just because it makes them believe somebody is doing something. Obama has to be elected by these people, so he gives them what they want, knowing that if he wins, he still has the logic behind him.
Because it would politically risky for him to ignore a basic emotional fear of the American people. These are just gimmicks that McCain has been using against him, but I guess he feels that the issue isn't worth losing the election over.





As mentioned earlier, McCain has also flip flopped on this issue, probably for similar reasons.
